Director's Message

Dear Members and Friends,

In the fall of 2015, Chief Curator Dulce Román and I visited the Savannah College of Art and Design where we were fortunate to see the stunning exhibition History, Labor, Life: The Prints of Jacob Lawrence. We inquired into the possibility of hosting the exhibition at the Harn and, happily, we are now able to bring this gathering of works by the great American modernist Jacob Lawrence to Gainesville for your enjoyment and enlightenment. Lawrence used vibrant colors, bold design and expressively abstracted figures to tell captivating stories about African American and African diasporic experiences as well as biblical narratives. Various series of Lawrence’s silk screen and lithographic prints explore aspects of everyday work, play, and domestic life; historic events such as the Haitian Revolution led by General Toussaint L’Ouverture; and scenes of the creation from the Book of Genesis. To assist us in planning the most effective ways to present, interpret and promote the exhibition, Harn curators and educators assembled a community advisory committee, as we do for every major exhibition at the Harn. The committee of 19 people included UF faculty and staff, a Museum Studies student, a museum docent and representatives from community arts, history and religious institutions. Their contributions have been invaluable and will help to ensure the success of the exhibition and related programming.

Be sure to mark your calendars for the Member pARTy on February 16 to celebrate the opening of the show, and the Community Kick-Off: The Art of Jacob Lawrence on Saturday, February 24 with activities to engage visitors of all ages. A rich array of programs inspired by the work of Jacob Lawrence will be scheduled throughout the run of the exhibition, so please keep an eye on the InForm newsletter and the web site to find those that appeal particularly to you. Most of all, help us spread the word by telling your friends and neighbors about this inspiring show and the rare opportunity to see so many works by Lawrence in our community.
