Harn to host lecture and book signing featuring "Almost Alice" artist

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — On Sept. 14 at the Harn Museum of Art, Maggie Taylor, the local artist whose work is featured in the exhibition Almost Alice: New Illustrations of Wonderland by Maggie Taylor, will give a lecture at 3 p.m. and sign copies of a new edition of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” that features her work. In the spirit of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale, there will be a high tea reception that follows. Seating for the lecture is limited. Please arrive early to claim a seat.

During the lecture, Taylor will describe the digital processes and techniques used to create her work, which was inspired by Carroll’s story. The 45 digital inkjet prints, which are on display until Oct. 19 at the Harn Museum, usually begin with an original photographic portrait—often a daguerreotype or tintype from the mid-19th century. Taylor then uses digital processes and montage techniques to add vibrant color and intricate detail, making the images simultaneously historic and contemporary. Her radical manipulation of source images but retention of photographic realism results in an ironic visual surrealism that perfectly complements the verbal wit and irony of Carroll’s writing.

The Modernbook publication of Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” featuring Taylor’s prints is available for purchase in the Harn Museum Store.

Maggie Taylor earned a BA in philosophy from Yale University and a MFA in photography from the University of Florida in 1987. She currently resides in Gainesville. Her work is in the collections of numerous museums, including The Art Museum, Princeton University; The Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University; Harn Museum of Art, University of Florida; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Santa Barbara Museum of Art, California; and The Museum of Photography, Seoul.

Admission to the Harn Museum of Art is free. For more information call 352-392-9826 or visit www.harn.ufl.edu.
