Family Day celebrates everyday art Oct. 25 at the Harn Museum of Art

GAINESVILLE, Fla. —Whether it is in retro 1950’s objects like plastic handbags, modular furniture and cabana wear or in a model airplane and a racing boat, everyone will be able to find the fun in everyday objects at the Harn’s Family Day on Oct. 25. Harn Museum of Art visitors will tour Promises of Paradise: Staging Mid-Century Miami and enjoy the opportunity to design their dream homes from 1 to 4 p.m.

Docents will give family-friendly tours of Promises of Paradise, an exhibition showcasing the architectural designs, furniture, textiles and decorative arts created by some of South Florida’s most influential mid-20th-century designers. Family Guides designed specifically for children, will be available throughout the exhibition to encourage interactive learning.

After the tours, local architect Michael Pellet will assist visitors in using some of the ideas they saw in the exhibition to design their dream homes with pencils, graph paper and rulers.

Promises of Paradise: Staging Mid-Century Miami
is organized by the Bass Museum of Art, Miami Beach, and is made possible by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The exhibition is sponsored locally by ERA Trend Realty and will be on display through Jan. 25. Admission to the Harn Museum of Art is free.
