Harn Museum of Art hosts Chinese New Year celebration
GAINESVILLE, Fla. —Celebrate the Year of the Ox at the Harn Museum of Art Family Day Jan. 31 from 1 to 4 p.m.
Guest artist Ruth Sheng will demonstrate the time-honored art of Chinese calligraphy, and families will have the opportunity to make their own Chinese scrolls. Activities will also include a traditional lion dance by the Meihua Student Association of Martial Arts.
Visitors of all ages will also enjoy guided tours of Highlights from the Asian Collection, an exhibition featuring works from one of the largest Asian art collections in the southeastern United States. This ongoing exhibition presents a selection of significant works representing a broad range of Asian cultures, historical periods and genres. The collection is divided into three geographical sub-collections: Chinese art; Japanese and Korean art; and Indian, Himalayan and Southeast Asian art. Approximately 10 percent of the Asian collection is on view at any time, and the selection of objects changes periodically.
Family Days are held five times a year and provide an opportunity for families to connect and spend time with each other while learning about art. Family Days are made possible by a generous grant from the Wachovia Foundation.

The Harn Museum of Art at SW 34th St. and Hull Rd. is one of the largest university art museums in the country with nearly 7,000 works in its collection focusing on African, Asian, modern and contemporary art and photography. The museum enhances the activities of the University of Florida and serves a culturally diverse audience through educational programming. Admission is free. Museum hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Parking is free on weekends.
