Dear Friends,
This spring and summer we offer visitors to the Harn three delightful new exhibitions that showcase the riches of our own permanent collection, enhanced by a sprinkling of special loans.
In the Melvin and Lorna Rubin Gallery, Curator of Photography Carol McCusker has installed her first show since joining the museum in August. In “All the World’s a Frame” Carol showcases masterful works of art, some of which have not been shown at the Harn for years, others never at all. As you view these images, think about the many ways photography reflects and influences your vision and understanding of the world.
In the North Gallery of the David A. Cofrin Asian Art Wing Curatorial Associate Allysa Peyton has mounted “String of Pearls: Traditional Indian Painting,” an installation of exquisitely rendered miniatures. Â Let these enchanting works of art and the traditional Indian music wafting through the gallery transport you, perchance to dream of faraway lands and times.
Opening in late May in the Gladys Gracy Harn Exhibition Hall is “Much Ado about Portraits,” organized by Cofrin Curator of Asian Art Jason Steuber in collaboration with the Harn’s other curators. This show brings together both familiar and less well known paintings, sculptures, photographs and drawings from all the Harn’s collecting areas and some select loans from regional collections. Each of these disparate works explores in some way the infinite variety of the human face, form and experience. Much like gazing into a mirror or people watching at a sidewalk cafe, “Much Ado about Portraits” offers something to capture the imagination of every viewer.

The Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art promotes the power of the arts

Accordingly, the Harn unites the university and the wider community to make groundbreaking contributions to research, teaching and service. The Harn makes great works of art accessible to diverse audiences by using a variety of innovative approaches to the exhibition and interpretation of art.
