Work With Us

This is an exciting time to work with the Harn Museum of Art, a museum that is constantly growing and evolving. By becoming involved with the Harn Museum, you can join a team of people that make educational and entertaining experiences possible for museum visitors. The museum offers a number of rewarding opportunities that include part-time and full-time positions and volunteer and salaried positions that are listed below. Positions are open to all qualified individuals, without reference to age, race, ethnicity, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin or condition of disability. Thank you for your interest in working with the Harn Museum of Art.

BE AN EMPLOYEE
The Harn Museum of Art has more than 45 employees in a variety of positions that include accounting, curatorial, conservation, development, education, marketing, information technology, human resources, guest services, merchandising, security and maintenance. Because the Harn Museum is a university-affiliated art museum, the University of Florida serves as the employer. To view a current list of available positions, visit the University of Florida Human Resources site.

BE AN INTERN
Internships are offered in all museum departments with the goal of providing professional experience and growth opportunities. With guidance from museum professionals, interns gain practical experience by working on projects and programs. In addition, the museum benefits from the contributions made by interns. Past interns have gone on to other internships or careers at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum of Art and the J. Paul Getty Museum, among others. Internships require participants to complete a specific number of hours per week. During these hours, interns complete the objectives of specific target projects and daily departmental assignments. Harn Museum internships are available on an ongoing basis with three yearly application deadlines and selection periods.

Deadlines
Spring term internships: October 1
Summer term internships: March 1
Fall term internships: June 1

For project descriptions and more information, call Intern Coordinator Allysa Browne at 352.392.9826 x2149, e-mail abrowne@harn.ufl.edu or download information and an application.

BE A MUSE

For creative, energetic and dynamic students, the MUSE program offers the opportunity to share a love of art with others. MUSEs (Museum University Student Educators) are one-semester project volunteers who create and present interactive and engaging experiences for museum visitors. Each spring and fall semester, a select group of 10–15 students from diverse academic backgrounds is selected to work together to imagine and produce programs unlike any others at the museum. MUSE programs have included Art off the Wall, when MUSEs shared their interpretation of works in the Harn collection through costumes and drama. For more information about the MUSE program, call Coordinator of Adult and Docent Programs Rebecca Fitzsimmons at 352.392.9826 x2153, e-mail rfitzsimmons@harn.ufl.edu or download an application.

BE A GALLERY GUIDE
The newest way to get involved at the Harn is to be a Gallery Guide. Gallery Guides are university student volunteers who are located throughout the museum’s galleries and greet guests at the visitor services desk. They offer assistance and information for visitors experiencing the exhibitions on view. To receive more information about Gallery Guides, call Vicki Tyson, visitor services and museum rental coordinator, at 352.392.9826 ext. 2148 or e-mail vtyson@harn.ufl.edu.

BE A DOCENT
Docents at the Harn Museum are volunteer tour guides who are trained to introduce and interpret the museum's collections and traveling exhibitions. They are motivated by a love of art and people, a desire to be involved in public service, and an interest in the study of art, education and communication. Being a docent requires the stamina and desire to engage in an ongoing learning process about Harn Museum exhibitions and the techniques of leading engaging and interactive tours.

Prospective docents must submit an application, attend orientation and complete a comprehensive new docent training program. At the end of training, a committee of education staff and veteran docents approves new docents based on demonstrated skill and quality of touring.

The next opportunity to join a new docent training program is fall 2009, but applications are always accepted. For more information about joining the Harn's docent program, call Coordinator of Adult and Docent Programs Rebecca Fitzsimmons at 352.392.9826 x2153, e-mail rfitzsimmons@harn.ufl.edu or download an application.

BE A VOLUNTEER
Volunteers at the Harn Museum are extensions of museum staff. They are essential to the success of the Harn Museum and operate as our ambassadors to the community. The volunteer program is comprised of students, retirees and full and part-time professionals of diverse backgrounds.

Volunteers are motivated by a love of art and people and a desire to be involved in public service to their community. Every volunteer is asked to make a personal commitment to learn about the museum’s physical layout, public programs, resources and exhibitions.

Participation is open to any member of the general public who is 16 years of age or older. A prospective volunteer must submit an application, attend a personal interview and complete the initial orientation and training session. For certain volunteer assignments, a background check is required.

For more information about volunteering, call Allysa Browne, volunteer coordinator, at 352.392.9826 x2149 or e-mail abrowne@harn.ufl.edu. To download an application, click here.
